Ode to March

It’s that time again, college hoops lovers

When we awaken from our winter slumber

It’s time for One Shining Moment and cutting down nets

Fast breaks, post-ups, and half-court sets

It’s the best time of the basketball season

Mayhem without rhyme or reason

It’s time to scream and cheer and roar

To cry “Havoc!” and let loose the Rams of war

Here’s a list of things you may see

In this Big Dance love song, from A to Z

It’s alley-oops and Lew Alcindor

Bubble teams and buzzer beaters

Cinderellas and Converse shoes

Destiny and Bryce Drew

Ewing, Nova, and Goliath fell

The Fab Five and Forty Minutes of Hell

George Mason and Hank Gathers

History-making Haskins and jerseys hung from rafters

Intense pressure but playing it cool

Jimmer, Jack, and Jordan rules

Coach K and Bobby Knight

Christian Laettner and oh, the fights

Manning and a little Magic

Never Nervous Pervis and a flair for the dramatic

The Big O, taking it to the rack

Phi Slamma Jamma and the Cardiac Pack

Quivering hands and quickening pulses

Bill Russell and rebounding forces

Shaka Smart and towel-chewing Sharks

David Thompson and three-point arcs

Underdogs and unlikely glee

Victory dances and Jimmy V

Wooden, West and Wildcats

The X-man knows where it’s at

Yelling, yowling, YOLO hashtags

Zeniths, nadirs, Zips and Zags

It’s every emotion in a two-week span

Every outcome known to man

When the game tips off, pull up a seat

And I promise to stop writing poetry.
